Do you struggle to read tarot cards?
Well, I had the same problem when I first read tarot cards too! Memorizing the meanings of each tarot card can be very difficult. It’s such a shame because there are so many people with amazing intuition and psychic abilities that give up on reading tarot cards because memorizing a deck of 78 tarot cards is too overwhelming. From minor arcanas to major arcanas, there are many categories these cards are organized into as well. The craziest part is that you don’t need to know each tarot cards’ meaning to read tarot cards! In fact, it’s better that you do not know the general meanings behind each tarot card.
So don’t memorize the tarot card meanings
Instead, you should focus on reading tarot cards using just your intuition. What does the card mean to you? What is your gut feeling saying? Listen to your senses. What comes up may not be what the tarot card traditionally means, but that’s okay! Tarot cards are a medium to read energy. You don’t need tarot cards to read energy, but it’s a fun and tactical way to do so.
How to Read Tarot Cards Intuitively
I like to use my senses to read tarot cards intuitively! Take a look at my breakdown below.
Sight:
- Look at the imagery on the cards!
- What colors do you see? Do these colors mean something to you?
- What symbols do you see? A bird, a star, flower, a cat, etc.? What are the immediate things you think about when you see these symbols?
Hearing:
- Do you “hear” any words pop up into your head when you see the card? If so, pay attention to it!
- Pay attention to not just the tarot card, but your surroundings too! Does your phone start ringing or you notice a sign in your environment when you read this tarot card? There are clues all around you!
Touch:
- Does the card make you feel some kind of way when you touch it?
- Does the tarot card literally feel different? For example, it may feel colder to the touch than other tarot cards…
Gut feeling or your “intuition”:
- Check your gut feeling. Does the card make you feel emotional? Does it remind you of a memory?
Now for some examples of how to read tarot cards intuitively!
Let’s look at some examples of how to read tarot cards! Below are examples using imagery (sight) since this is not a full tarot card reading.
The Star Tarot Card
- The Star tarot card is a major arcana (and one of my favorite cards!) We can assume from just the name that this card has a magnetic and attractive quality. On the card, there is a woman that is under the shining stars, nude and relaxed. This feminine image hints at feminine energies such as receiving and attracting. Yellow is also a very optimistic color, so we get a positive energy from this tarot card. Putting all of this information together, we can sense that this card is a positive card for attracting things into your life or being attractive as a person. In this example, the meaning we have inferred is the actual meaning of the card!
The Knight of Swords Tarot Card
- Let’s look at an example that may be harder to interpret. The Knight of Swords tarot card depicts a man riding his horse with one hand wielding a sword. The dynamic art style suggests that the knight is moving very quickly, so we can interpret this card to be fast-paced. The knight has a very intense look, as if he were to go into battle, so we can read this tarot card as having to go into battle or an offensive position rather soon. If we look even closer, the horse’s gaze is actually looking back towards the knight. It looks somewhat weary of the knight’s actions. This may hint that the knight is being impulsive and this can lead to a dangerous situation. We can gather lots of information just from looking at what is depicted in the tarot card! The true meaning behind the Knight of Swords tarot card however, is journey, advancement, and innovation. It embodies the pursuit of new ideas and discoveries. The knight gazes ahead with wisdom and readiness for challenges, poised for action and filled with determination. Compared to what we concluded the meaning was from just the tarot card imagery, it is in fact a little different from the traditional meaning!
The Two of Wands Tarot Card
- Lastly, let’s look at the Two of Wands tarot card. In this tarot card, we see a man looking out at the distance. He seems to be in deep thought. He stands between two wands, but with one hand on one wand and his other hand holding a small globe. The globe seems to represent responsibility because he has the entire world in the palm of his hand. This suggests that whatever he is thinking of will be significant. From just this information, we can interpret this card as having to think about many responsibilities and perhaps the person is overwhelmed. On the other hand, this person may be a very rational and intelligent person with many responsibilities, suggesting that they are reliable and of high net worth. The key to deciphering what this card may mean is to read it within the context of the other tarot cards it is around! The traditional meaning of the Two of Wands however, is courage, boldness and power as well as embarking on a new journey.
Conclusion
While memorizing the meanings of tarot cards can be daunting, with all 78 cards organized into minor and major arcana, it’s important to remember that you don’t need to know each card’s meaning to read tarot effectively! Instead of focusing solely on memorization, embrace your intuition. Trust your instincts and interpret the cards based on what resonates with you personally. By engaging your senses and paying attention to the imagery, symbols, and your own feelings, you can develop a deeper understanding of the messages the cards are conveying. Remember, tarot cards are a tool for tapping into energy and intuition. So, trust yourself, embrace your intuition, and let the cards speak to you in their own unique language. Happy reading!
